The bones were already in place for this cottage garden in West Orange
Our client wanted an abundant cottage garden to bring life to her outdoor patio space, and to bring her joy – whether she’s peeking out from her kitchen window or relaxing under the pergola. Her year-round perennial garden ebbed and flowed through the seasons, and having us change out her annuals for spring, summer and fall added an extra layer of color and a treat for her to come home to. We pick up here with this client story at the moment when we are transitioning one of our favorite gardens (but they’re all our favorites!) to fall. Tall celosia placed in the back layer, closest to the patio, encloses the outdoor seating area and creates a space that’s both cozy and magical. Tall asters in lavender and deep violet are planted among the next layer of perennials, and burnt orange, burgundy, and gold mums burst forth from the mid-layer. Along the front border of the garden, the shortest annuals weave their way: sienna marigolds, soft pink asters, and royal purple pansies. It all comes together as a jewel-toned tapestry that positively glows at autumn’s golden hour.
